Dental Implants
Dental implants are the closest thing to natural teeth in terms of replacing missing a singular tooth or multiple teeth. Implants offer superior comfort to traditional metal or acrylic dentures and do not usually involve traumatising natural teeth like traditional dental bridges. They are fixed into the jaw bone and are maintained in a similar fashion to natural teeth (with regular cleaning and home care). If they are well maintained, implants can remain healthy and functional for decades in the mouth.
Having a dental implant placed in the mouth takes several appointments over a period of 3-6 months. The implant is first surgically placed into the jaw bone under local anaesthetic then a period of 3-6 months healing is needed before the implant can be used. This healing process is termed "osseointegration" as bone actively grows onto the implant surface and locks it into place. Once this is successful, an implant crown or bridge can be fabricated and attached onto the implant (like the pictures below).
